This assessment is built on the seven ecosystem components from the Don't Layer It On framework — the same framework used to lead AI integration inside a national nonprofit from the ground up.

Component 1 of 7 · Work

How would you describe the state of your organization's core workflows and processes?

Most processes live in people's heads. Things get done but it depends heavily on who's doing them.

Some processes are documented but inconsistently. There are clear gaps and workarounds.

Core processes are documented, mostly consistent, and understood across the team.

Component 2 of 7 · Workforce

How would you describe your team's current relationship with AI tools?

A few people are using AI on their own. Most haven't engaged with it at all.

AI use is growing but it's uneven and undocumented. There's curiosity but no shared foundation.

AI literacy is becoming part of how we work. Staff are trained and supported in their use.

Component 3 of 7 · Culture

When something new is introduced in your organization, how does it typically land?

There's often resistance or skepticism. New initiatives frequently stall or get quietly abandoned.

It depends on who's leading it and how it's communicated. Some things stick, others don't.

We have a culture of learning and experimentation. People generally lean in when change is well-led.

How would you describe the state of your organization's data?

Data is scattered across spreadsheets, inboxes, and individual drives. Finding it is a project.

We have systems but the data isn't always clean, consistent, or easy to act on.

Our data is organized, accessible, and reliable enough to support analysis and decision-making.

Component 5 of 7 · Processes

Can you identify high-volume, repetitive processes in your organization that drain capacity?

Not really. Everything feels custom and relationship-dependent. Nothing obvious comes to mind.

Yes, there are a few — but we've never formally mapped or prioritized them for improvement.

Absolutely. We can name them, rank them, and we're actively looking for ways to improve them.

Does your organization have a formal AI policy or governance structure in place?

No. Staff are using AI tools without any organizational guidance, policy, or oversight.

We've talked about it and there are some informal guidelines, but nothing formal or documented.

Yes. We have a written AI policy, defined oversight structures, and someone accountable for governance.

How well does your leadership team understand your current technology landscape?

Honestly, not well. Different teams use different tools and there's no unified picture of what we have.

We have a general sense but it's not mapped or evaluated for integration potential.

We have a clear picture of our tech stack and understand how our systems connect and where the gaps are.
